Charles A. “Chuck” Donovan is the President of the Charlotte Lozier Institute. He served as Legislative Director of the National Right to Life Committee more than three decades ago, worked as a writer for President Reagan, helped to lead the Family Research Council for nearly two decades and most recently has been Senior Research Fellow in Religion and Civil Society at The Heritage Foundation. This week, the CBS News program “On Assignment” included a long feature on what it described as the near eradication of Down syndrome in Iceland.
As the story unfolded, viewers learned of the impact of genetic screening and abortion on a countrywide scale.
On that tiny island, known to people mostly for its geothermal pools and Northern Lights, what one scientist called “heavy-handed genetic counseling” has led to the death in utero of nearly every boy and girl affected by Down syndrome.
The CBS News report focused on a single nation, but the trend toward elimination of children with Down syndrome is tragically widespread.

Trump’s Transgender Military Ban
It took President Trump kicking a hornet’s nest to provide a moment’s distraction from the media’s obsession with all things Russian.
His tweeted reversal of President Obama’s transgender military inclusion mandate didn’t knock the Russians off the front pages or CNN for long. But it refocused the public on Mr. Trump’s signature promise to “make America great again.”
The abruptly issued order actually has little to do with sexual politics. It’s about restoring the singular purpose of the military, which is to wage wars and defend the nation. During the campaign, Mr. Trump vowed to rebuild the military, and that’s what he’s doing.
Anything that distracts from the military’s main mission or makes it harder for our troops to survive in combat is a stealth attack on our men and women in uniform. Mr. Trump made it clear that military readiness overrides all other considerations, including hurt feelings or threats by disappointed interest groups.

I have been teaching the abortion controversy to college students for about fifteen years. Most of my students defend abortion. I disagree with them, but what’s most worrisome is how weak the reasons are that they give for their position and how much of their reasoning, followed consistently, would also justify infanticide.
My students have made up their minds before they have studied the pro-choice side of the debate, let alone the pro-life side. One would have hoped that they would have reflected longer and read more widely before killing anybody.

Facebook Hate Crimes
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg declared last week that the social media site was dedicated to removing any content “that promotes or celebrates hate crimes.”
Mark Zuckerberg posted to Facebook recently condemning the recent events at Charlottesville which saw three deaths over the course of the weekend as far-left and far-right protesters clashed. The Facebook CEO stated that the company would be watching out for rallies in the future, stating, “With the potential for more rallies, we’re watching the situation closely.”
“We won’t always be perfect, but you have my commitment that we’ll keep working to make Facebook a place where everyone can feel safe,” he claimed.
