The 2022 Winter Olympics will commence on February 4 in Beijing, China.
Typically, watching the Olympics is an enjoyable way to support American athletes and express our patriotism. But sometimes one of the best ways to support American values and basic human rights is by taking a stand through boycott. I believe this is one of those times.
Communist China has a long history of human rights abuses. In recent years, however, China’s actions have been especially grave—including genocide against minority religious populations, and a massive COVID-19 cover-up that kept vital information from the rest of the world during the pandemic, costing millions of lives.
Participation in the Beijing Olympics will be like an international seal of approval on China’s activities.
To quote my friend Gary Bauer of American Values who spoke on Point of View, these games will be “very reminiscent of the Olympic games that happened under Adolph Hitler,” and it’s clear China will “use these Olympic games as a tremendous propaganda coup for the Chinese Communist Party.”
We can’t change the decisions of the International Olympic Committee. But we can take action on a personal level. Even as we wish our athletes well, praying for their safety and success, we can resist communist China’s propaganda by refusing to watch the Beijing Winter Olympics.
We simply cannot ignore the gross human rights abuses China has inflicted on its own population and on the world.
