She has been passionate about the transformational power of education all her life, having been given the gift of being homeschooled. She taught for over a decade in Austin-area schools and served as an assistant principal at a charter school in Lewisville. These experiences have given her the opportunity to see first-hand how students can thrive when they have excellent options.
Erin earned a B.A. in classical studies from Hillsdale College a master of arts in classics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She enjoys cooking, audiobooks, and spending time with her family, friends, and dog, Buckley.
Since joining ADF in 2006, Scruggs has worked on and prevailed in a variety of cases that protect the right of people to freely express their faith in their school, in their business, and in the public square.
Scruggs earned his J.D. at Harvard Law School in 2006. Before graduating from law school, he completed the Alliance Defending Freedom leadership development program to become a Blackstone Fellow.
A member of the bars of Arizona and Tennessee, he is also admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court and multiple federal district and appellate courts.
She is also a Senior Fellow at Frontiers of Freedom and the Institute for Liberty and previously was Director of External Relations for Texas based Institute for Policy Innovation.

She is also the proud Army Mom of Lt. Connor Houston, currently posted in Vicenza, Italy.
Kayla openly shares her story of redemption and hope in the midst of tragedy, the death by suicide of her husband Pastor Andrew Stoecklein. Andrew who, with a deep love for family and a passion for ministry, did not seem a likely candidate for such a heartbreaking end will always be remembered by Kayla for the way he lived and not the way he died.
Kayla serves notice to us all that we shouldn’t allow our secrets to be our downfall, that if we’re struggling, to let someone know. We’re loved and valued by God and he has a great plan for our lives. Through any trial we may face, God’s got it.
