Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., said on the Senate floor Thursday he told President Donald Trump that firing the U.S. attorney general would be an extremely “bad idea,” The Hill reports.
“It’s been a strange couple of hours – lots and lots of goofy talk about firing the attorney general,” Sasse said.
Trump told Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions “shouldn’t” have recused himself from the Russia investigation, questioned his loyalty, and said he now puts “justice” in quotes when talking about the Justice Department.
“I would just like to say in public what I’ve been saying to my colleagues in a message I just communicated to the president of the United States,” the senator added. “It would be a very, very, very bad idea to fire the attorney general because he’s not executing his job as a political hack. That is not the job of the attorney general.
“Everybody in this body knows that Jeff Sessions has been executing his job in a way faithful to his oath of office, to the Constitution, and trying to defend the rule of law.”
Sessions responded to the president’s remarks in a short, two-line statement: “While I am attorney general, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations. I demand the highest standards, and where they are not met, I take action.”
