Foster Friess launched Friess Associates in 1974 to invest in lesser known, rapidly growing, well-financed American growth equities. Forbes Magazine named the firm's flagship Brandywine Fund one of the decade's top mutual funds as a result of its average 20% annual gains in the 1990's.

Born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin in 1940, Foster is a first generation college graduate, earning a Business Administration degree at the University of Wisconsin, where the Iron Cross Society honored him as one of the university's most outstanding senior men.
