JC Watts Jr
Author, Former Congressman
J. C. Watts rose to fame as a quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners, leading the Sooners to two Orange Bowl Championships. After graduating college, Watts was recruited to join the Canadian Football League. Following his football career, Watts became a Baptist pastor, ran for Congress, and became the first African American elected to statewide office in Oklahoma. He enjoyed four terms in the U.S. Congress, each year winning a larger margin of the vote. In 1997, Watts delivered the Republican response to President Clinton’s State of the Union address and later became well known for authoring the legislation for President George W. Bush’s faith-based initiative as chairman of the Republican Conference. As a congressman, Watts was known as a “devoted conservative.” Watts retired from Congress and began lobbying and opened his own business. He is the father of six children and resides with his wife in Fairfax, Virginia.
Dig Deep: 7 Truths to Finding the Strength Within
In Dig Deep, J.C. Watts offers seven powerful maxims that have kept him grounded throughout his roller-coaster career from star college quarterback to U.S. Congressman. The first black Republican ever elected to a leadership position in Congress, Watts resisted the rat-race of Washington and eventually declined re-election. His seven simple principles are a blueprint for living a fulfilling and meaningful life without falling to the temptations of reckless ambition or indulgence. Dig Deep is a powerful, simple guide that will help readers find the courage and faith to live the best life possible.

Strong and Weak: Embracing a Life of Love, Risk and True Flourishing
Flourishing people are strong and weak. Two common temptations lure us away from abundant living―withdrawing into safety or grasping for power. True flourishing, says Andy Crouch, travels down an unexpected path―being both strong and weak. We see this unlikely mixture in the best leaders―people who use their authority for the benefit of others, while also showing extraordinary willingness to face and embrace suffering. We see it in Jesus, who wielded tremendous power yet also exposed himself to hunger, ridicule, torture and death. Rather than being opposites, strength and weakness are actually meant to be combined in every human life and community. Only when they come together do we find the flourishing for which we were made. With the characteristic insight, memorable stories and hopeful realism he is known for, Andy Crouch shows us how to walk this path so that the image of God can shine through us. Not just for our own good, but for the sake of others.
