Based in Seattle, Jay has spent the last decade on the frontlines of freedom from sexual exploitation and pornography. Jay works with men and women to find freedom from unwanted sexual behavior through guiding them to identify the unique reasons that bring them to it. In addition to his therapy practice and frequent speaking engagements, Jay is also a lecturer for the City of Seattle’s “john school,” a program designed for men who have been arrested for soliciting prostitution.
Jay holds an MDiv and master’s in counseling psychology from the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology and received post-graduate training under Dr. Patrick Carnes and Dr. Dan Allender while serving as a Senior Fellow at the Allender Center.
Jay Stringer’s (M.Div, MA, LMHC) original research found that unwanted sexual behavior can be both shaped by and predicted based on the parts of our story―past and present―that remain unaddressed. When we pay attention to our unwanted sexual desires and identify the unique reasons that trigger them, the path of healing is revealed.
Although many of us feel ashamed and unwanted after years of sexual brokenness, the book invites the reader to see that behavior as the very location God can most powerfully work in their lives. Counselors, pastors, and accountability partners of those who experience sexual shame will also find in this book the deep spiritual and psychological guidance they need to effectively minister to the sexually broken around them.
Under Mawyer’s leadership, CAN has grown to over 150,000 members. He has written four books, directed three documentary films and has appeared on the top television and radio programs in the country, including Larry King Live, The O’Reilly Factor, The Hannity Show, NBC’s Today Show, Pat Robertson’s 700 Club, and Entertainment Tonight.
His four books include: Silent Shame: The Shocking Story of Child Sexual Abuse in America; Pathways to Success: First Steps for Becoming a Christian in Action; Defending the American Family; and his most recent book, Twilight in America: The Untold Story of Islamic Terrorist Training Camps Inside America.
Mawyer has been married 40 years to his wife, Bonnie. Together they have four children and four grandchildren.
