American men are struggling.

Have you heard of NEET? The acronym stands for Not in Employment, Education, or Training. Today, that describes a significant cohort of young men.

Consider

There is other evidence indicating that today’s young men are struggling. According to Institute for Family Studies (IFS):

• 43% of young men say, “I am inclined to think that I am a failure.” 

• 61% of young men say, “I often feel that I have little control over the things that happen to me.”

• 48% feel that they are lacking community much of the time.

An article by IFS researcher Brad Wilcox in Compact observes: 

“More than half of young men gamble, with 35 percent doing so daily or several times a week—a number which is even higher among conservative young men, 47 percent of whom gamble daily or several times a week. Likewise, 43 percent watch porn daily or several times a week. An even greater number, two thirds of young men, play video games many times a day or at least once a day.”

And yet, “Most young men still want to get married, value financial independence, and want to become fathers.” 

Society needs men—virtuous, courageous, hardworking men who raise families and serve God. And yet for too long, our culture has told boys that masculinity is “toxic” and in many ways, has cast young males aside. It’s time to encourage young men, and we should start with prayer.

Pray

Please pray the following prayer along with me: 

Dear God,

Please raise up godly figures to disciple and influence young men toward what is good and noble.

Empower men who are struggling with addiction—whether addiction to a substance, to gambling, to pornography, or something else—to break free in Your name. 

Continue to turn the tide in our culture’s conversation to recognize our need for good men and to value both masculinity and femininity. 

Give more young men a desire for You and provide leaders who can train them in the faith.
