Overcoming Through Discipleship
The Bible repeatedly issues warnings to believers to overcome the temptation of the flesh, the seduction of the world, and the deception of Satan. How many of us are living as overcomers today?
Consider
Data from researchers like Dr. George Barna show us that often, professing Christians know as little of what the Bible actually teaches as the rest of the world. If we don’t know the Word, how can we live it out and overcome temptation and deception? The answer is we can’t.
But it’s not enough to be hearers of the Word. We must be doers. We must be willing to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and obey God’s will for our lives. That won’t always be easy, especially in our American context where material wealth, cultural acceptance, and daily comfort can numb us to our true calling. If we want to make disciples—and be ready for Christ’s return—obedience is not an option.
Recently on Point of View, I interviewed author and radio host Charles Crismier. He noted that the modern American church has often been more interested in making converts than making disciples. If we were more intentional about discipling our families and church members, so that they truly know God’s Word, we might see more Christians overcoming sin and living in a way that points to the truth, beauty, and goodness of God’s design.
Pray
Please pray the following prayer along with me:
Dear God,
Search my heart and show me areas of my life that are not fully surrendered to you.
Convict American Christians of the ways we have let prosperity, comfort, or the allure of cultural acceptance hinder full obedience to Your Word.
Renew in our churches, families, and communities a focus on discipling one another as we are called to do.
Deliver us from temptation and deception as we await the return of Jesus Christ.
In Jesus Name,
Amen.
