“The separation of church and state” appears nowhere in the Constitution, yet the phrase has assumed an outsized influence on the public understanding of the First Amendment. First appearing in a letter Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptist Association of Connecticut, it was stripped from its context and injected into the U.S. Supreme Court’s Establishment Clause jurisprudence with damaging results.
