Christian Zionism
Kerby Anderson
Michael Brown recently wrote about “The Truth About Christian Zionism.” He wanted to answer two important questions: Is Christian Zionism an oxymoron? and Is Christian Zionism a heresy?
These questions have been around the church for some time, but they reached a critical level due to several Tucker Carlson interviews. In one, he challenged Senator Ted Cruz about support for Israel. In another interview with groyper Nick Fuentes, he complained that Christian Zionists have a “brain virus” and are promoting a Christian heresy.
First, he dismisses the idea that Christian Zionism is an oxymoron. First, God’s covenant with the patriarchs remains intact (Psalm 105:7-11). Second, Jesus the Messiah did not cancel the promises to the patriarchs (Romans 15:8-9). Third, there are many Old Testament prophecies about the Jewish people regathering to the ancient homeland (Ezekiel 36-37). And the Sinai Covenant cannot annul the earlier promises to the patriarchs (Galatians 3:17).
He adds, that is why Jesus is returning to Jerusalem rather than to any other city. And it is also true that the Bible speaks of Jesus returning to a Jewish Jerusalem (see, e.g., Zechariah 12; Matthew 23:37-39).
He then answers the question of whether Christian Zionism is a heresy. The previous comments should be sufficient to answer that. He also responds to the argument that this idea only originated with the teachings of J.N. Darby in the 1830s. I have also seen videos of people arguing that it was promoted by the Scofield Bible or speakers on prophecy. His answer is to begin quoting from earlier church leaders and theologians while also providing quotes from Puritan and Anglican leaders in England.
I recognize that some Christians may disagree with his comments. But I would also argue you can’t call Christian Zionism a heresy.
