Dr. Guy Millère is a professor at the University of Paris who has written a summary that has the appropriate title, “Europe in Free Fall.” He begins by warning that Europe’s erasure as a civilization is underway.

He says Europe economically is in “ghastly shape.” Economic growth within the European Union has lagged that of the US. One reason has been that those countries have established welfare states that have expanded and stifle economic growth. The other has been the sad reality that the European Union has enacted so many regulations that “place a heavy encumbrance on businesses.” He adds, “international investment is turning away from Europe. Nine of the world’s top tech companies are Americans; the tenth is Taiwanese.”

Energy and the environment are another stifling issue. Although Europe has faced heatwaves, the European resistance to air conditioning continues. It is often just viewed as an expensive luxury that consumes electricity, even though tens of thousands have died. Europeans are also pessimistic about the future because of the regular narratives about energy use and global warming.

Culture is another major issue. He documents that “most new immigrants in Europe come from the Muslim world and appear to have no interest whatsoever in assimilating or becoming more westernized.”  Many are discouraged from doing so.

This also has an impact on politics. Populist parties want to defend Western civilization and values while also opposing the Islamization on Europe and “civilizational erasure.” But the legacy parties lead by European elites reject those ideas and their candidates.

His conclusion is warranted. Europe is in free fall.
