Many of the candidates running for office in this election season are promoting the idea of “Medicare for All.” Dr. Merrill Matthews writes that “Medicare for All Means Medicare for None.” He was on my radio program to explain.

He begins with a strong statement that the slogan Medicare for All “may be one of the most deceptive public policy marketing schemes in modern history.” The reason is simple. Medicare for All will not be anything like the current Medicare program because it will eliminate Medicare as we know it.

In most government-run health care systems, government bureaucrats determine what services and medicines are available. They will also determine who can have them and when. The bureaucrats (and not your doctor) will make decisions about the access you have to medical services and medicines.

Senator Bernie Sanders admits that calling his program Medicare for All will be popular because most Americans on Medicare like the program. In a recent NBC News poll, 90 percent of seniors on Medicare were satisfied with their plan. Therefore, Senator Sanders argues on his Senate website that “every resident of the US will receive health insurance through an expanded Medicare program.”

Dr. Matthew says in his article and in our interview, “That is a blatantly false statement.” He goes on to say that under Medicare for All, “seniors can kiss their Medicare plan goodbye.” Instead, this program will end up being like the British National Health Service’s government-run health care system. A majority of British subjects are dissatisfied with their current health system.

Many voters will be misled this election season by a slogan chosen to promote socialized medicine. Don’t be deceived.
