A Republic...if you can keep it-Benjamin Franklin

Kerby Anderson Yesterday I talked about democracy and our republic by examining the principles set forth in Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Today I would like to examine a recent tweet by President Biden about democracy. “Democracy is more than a form of government,” he wrote. “It’s a way of being. A way of seeing the world. A way that defines who we are, what we believe, and why we do what we do.” In a recent Breakpoint commentary, John Stonestreet…

Gettysburg Address on boulder at Gettysburg field

Kerby Anderson At a time when politicians are talking about threats to democracy, it might be worthwhile to consider what democracy really is. But first a disclaimer: America is a republic, not a democracy. Professor Allen Guelzo recently wrote about “Lincoln’s Vision of Democracy.” After the battle of Gettysburg, Lincoln was asked to participate in the dedication of a national cemetery in that town. The featured orator was Edward Everett, but the short 272-word speech by Abraham Lincoln is the…

Iranian Women Protesting - Mahsa Amini

Kerby Anderson Back in September, a 22-year-old woman named Mahsa Amini died in custody after being arrested by the Iranian morality police. The news sparked a protest from Iranian women not only in that country but in other places around the world. I have discussed these protests with many of my radio guests, including Rex Rogers of SAT-7, Hermoz Shariat of Iran Alive Ministries, and former secretary of state Mike Pompeo. These protests, primarily led by women, have been pushing…

Husband & Wife - Holding hands

Kerby Anderson The congressional vote on the so-called Respect for Marriage Act illustrates how moral principles can easily give way to public opinion. One senator noted that less than three decades ago, “President Bill Clinton signed into law a bill sponsored by then-Representative Chuck Schumer” which had the title “the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.” A quarter of a century ago, the same president signed into law the Defense of Marriage Act defining marriage between one man and one woman. But…

FTX crash

Kerby Anderson Anyone wondering if cryptocurrency regulation was coming soon need look no further than the FTX scandal that unfolded this month. Sam Bankman-Fried founded FTX in 2019. A few months ago, he was called the “J.P. Morgan of crypto.” Now he is being called the Bernie Madoff of crypto. The financial issues surrounding the scandal are significant, but so are the moral issues. The founder was one of 10 roommates involved in various sexual relationships with each other while…

Classroom w/ trans and teacher

Penna Dexter A bright spot in the midterm election results was the success of many candidates who won school board positions by opposing wokeness, radical gender ideologies and overzealous COVID policies.  Many of these candidates, and others who have been winning local elections over the past couple of years, received training and support from groups like the 1776 Project and Moms for Liberty. The idea is to flip majority-Left school boards to boards containing majorities who will recognize and remove…

millennials standing - torsos

Kerby Anderson George Barna has been doing an extensive inventory of the worldviews of Americans through the Cultural Research Center at Arizona Christian University. He was on my radio program last week to talk about two of his most recent surveys dealing with truth and morality. Past generations of Americans viewed God as the basis for truth. Not only has that changed for the general population, it has also changed significantly within the church. He found that there were certain…

Thankful for freedoms - cornucopia

Kerby Anderson Each year, we take time from our busy lives to celebrate a day of Thanksgiving. Though many holidays have become secular celebrations, this holiday still retains much of its historic religious overtones. A day of Thanksgiving was set aside by the Pilgrims who founded Plymouth Colony. Life was hard in the New World.  Half of the Pilgrims died in the first terrible winter. After the first harvest was completed, Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving and…

Armed US Soldiers on Capitol steps

Kerby Anderson Yesterday I talked about a commentary by Glen Greenwald criticizing the call for a domestic war on terror. One of his concerns is the attempt to justify new domestic police powers because speech can “incite violence.” Not only is that used to justify going after our fellow Americans, it also was the basis for the impeachment article against Trump. Citing Rudy Giuliani in what constitutes incitement wouldn’t be helpful since he has been the former president’s lawyer. It…

Razor-wire fencing around the Capitol

Kerby Anderson We are hearing more and more talk of instituting a domestic war on terror. Glen Greenwald says he has seen all of this before. Some calling for new domestic police powers against “terrorists” admit they are using a model from the first war on terror nearly two decades ago. Politicians and pundits even suggest that we think about creating a 9/11 type of commission for domestic extremism. That would obviously be modeled on the 9/11 Commission established in 2002. Perhaps,…
