Pandemic of Lunacy
Kerby Anderson
Today is April Fool’s Day, so it seems appropriate to talk about the new book by J. Budziszewski, Pandemic of Lunacy: How to Think Clearly When Everyone Around You Seems Crazy. He was on my radio program to talk about his book.
His book identifies and answers 30 different lunacies, broken down into various sections. Part One are the delusions about virtue and happiness. We talked about the postmodern idea that basic right and wrong are different for everyone.
Part Two are the delusions about politics and government. One of the delusions is the lunacy that we can attain the common good without virtue. Our founders rejected such an idea because they knew it was false.
Part Three are delusions about family and sexuality. In his introduction he admits that most people would not have predicted we would live in a world where some believe there are ninety-five genders, and that man can get pregnant.
Part Four are delusions about what it means to be human. This gets into topics ranging from abortion to evolution to transhumanism.
Part Five are delusions about what is real and unreal. Two of the lunacies are (1) the belief that each person has his own reality, and (2) things are whatever we say they are. Sometimes it is hard to take some of these lunacies seriously.
Part Six are delusions about God and religion. Two of those lunacies are (1) we can’t know the truth about God, and (2) the truth is that there is no God. These views are even harder to accept considering so much evidence coming forward in fields as widely diverse as science and archaeology.
His book is for people looking for answers to these crazy ideas or looking for a book to hand to someone with crazy ideas.
