Commensurate with an executive order President Trump issued early last year, the White House has just released a sweeping report, the result of its audit of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. The report details examples of the museum’s distortions of our history expressed through various exhibits and even the words of the museum’s own leaders. 

The president’s March 2025 order, entitled Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History, calls for a review of selected Smithsonian museums. 

This 162-page report put out by the White House Domestic Policy Council says the American history museum’s leadership has “explicitly adopted an ideological framework that no longer treats the American story as a shared national inheritance to be taught or celebrated, but as a political instrument to divide, dispirit and discourage our citizens.” 

Indeed, Gary Bauer, who headed up the Domestic Policy Council in the Reagan White House says, “If you visit the National Museum of American History, you walk away depressed and demoralized. All you get are smears of the Founding Fathers and how bad America is.” He believes this audit is key to reversing “the left-wing indoctrination that has infected our schools and hijacked our institutions.”

The report’s release, as the nation marks its 250th birthday — which the museum refuses to celebrate — will hopefully prompt Congress to reevaluate the nearly $1.1 billion, dollars, it appropriates for the Smithsonian Institution every year. 

The Heritage Foundation calls on Congress to act, stating that the report “clearly documents how the museum has shifted its mission from history to woke activism.” Senior fellow Mike Gonzalez says it helps to explain the rise of Marxist politicians who “despise America’s history and heritage.”

A national history museum can be an honest showcase of a nation. But the anti-American left has a hold on our schools and institutions. You may hear cries of “censorship.”  This White House is calling for honesty, and a dose of patriotism.
