President Donald Trump announced a temporary immigration ban Monday that a conservative-leaning poll from three days ago found had 70% support among voters, The Washington Times reported.
“Seventy percent of registered voters believe the federal government should place a temporary ban on allowing people from any other country to enter the United States,” according to the latest Rasmussen Reports poll conducted last week.
“That total includes 34% who believe that even Americans living abroad should have to wait until the pandemic is over before returning.”
Trump was asked about the polls supporting the immigration ban and whether they might have spurred the Monday night’s announcement.
“It’s a high number,” Trump told reporters during Tuesday’s coronavirus task force briefing. “I did not see that number. I heard there was a poll. I’m sure there will be a lot of polls.
“No, look, I think the American people want to be sure that they have jobs for the American people, not for people that come in – in many cases illegally – into out country.
“I don’t know where the numbers are, but I think just common sense tells you that’s where we should be, and there’s where the American people want to be, and we’re going to build our country back.”
The demographics supporting the ban including even a majority of those who are not fans of the president, according to the report.
“Among those who strongly approve of President Trump, 84% support the ban,” Scott Rasmussen reported. “Among those who strongly disapprove of the president, 57% share that same view.
“Overall, among all voters, just 15% oppose a temporary ban. In no measured demographic group does opposition reach 25%.”
A demographic breakdown of those supporting the ban:
- 82% of Republicans.
- 66% of Independents.
- 64% of Democrats.
Rasmussen Reports is a poll that does a few things that makes it a more accurate representation of American voters. First, it used likely voters vs. adults or registered voters. Also, it tends to give a representative sample of Republicans vs. Democrats. Many pollsters oversample Democrats. This Rasmussen poll included 37% Democrats and 33% Republicans.
The Rasmussen Reports’ poll surveyed 1,250 likely voters nationally from April 12-16 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
