The Democratic Party made a desperate gamble when it decided to fund the campaigns of Republican candidates during the primary season who they figured would be too extreme to win in the general election. They seemed to believe that by elevating individuals who question the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, they would have opponents who are easier to defeat.
This strategy might backfire.
The Democrats’ assumption that “election deniers” would turn off voters does not appear to hold water. In fact, it does not appear that 2020 is on most people’s minds, regardless of political affiliation.
Grace Curley writes in The Spectator:
The left figured if they could help the ultra-mega-MAGA election-denying candidates win the primaries, then they could go on to paint said candidates as extreme and unhinged during the general election. When November 8 finally came around, it would be a landslide for the Democrats.
Simple, right? Unfortunately for Democrats, things are not going as planned.
Curley rightly points out that one of the glaring issues with this strategy is that “by donating to the very candidates they claim are ‘threats to democracy,’ the Democrats inadvertently admitted their apoplectic warnings about the danger of these election deniers were nothing more than political theater.”
She later hits on the most important element in this equation: Nobody gives a crap about questioning the results of an election. “The polls indicate that for most voters inflation is the number one concern,” she writes.
Shocking, isn’t it?
I’ve seen plenty of polling over this past year leading up to the midterms. Not a single one indicated that Americans are concerned over those who question the results of the last presidential election. In fact, the Jan. 6 riot, which Democrats have been caterwauling about for almost two years, doesn’t even rank high on the list.
But to be fair, some polling suggests that at least some Americans are concerned about the state of “democracy.” However, these tend to be mostly Democratic voters who would be voting for Democrats anyway. Nevertheless, it is quite clear that denying the outcome of 2020 isn’t a dealbreaker for most voters.
Additionally, it is worth noting that election denial is not purely a Republican tendency. Democrats have questioned the results of several different races, including two presidential elections. Stacey Abrams pretended she didn’t actually lose her governor’s race in 2018. Failed candidate Hillary Clinton is already denying the result of the 2024 presidential election.
It’s hard to take leftist hand-wringing over election denial when Democrats gladly poured tons of money into the coffers of Republicans who question the 2020 outcome. It’s even harder considering that they have no problem denying the results of elections they don’t win. Hell, people aren’t even being swayed by their incessant attempts to link any GOP candidate who doesn’t believe the election was free and fair to Jan. 6. Just recently, Arizona Democrats cynically exploited the mother of Brian Sicknick, a Capitol police officer who died of natural causes after helping to quell the riot.
Of course, Lake handled the disgusting ad like a boss.
But let’s just call this what it is: Desperation.
The American people have been dealing with the consequences of Democratic governance since the beginning of last year, and they aren’t too crazy about it. Driving inflation, increasing crime, and trying to force people to take a vaccine aren’t working out too well for the donkey party.
Democrats know they are in for a brutal shellacking next Tuesday, and they have known it since earlier this year. It’s why they have been trying to throw whatever they can against the wall, hoping something will stick. Unfortunately for them, nothing is sticking.
