As Senate Democrats on Thursday continue to press for a further delay of the confirmation process of Supreme Court justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., unleashed anger on his colleagues across the aisle that apparently had been building over weeks.
“If you wanted an FBI investigation, you could have come to us,” he told Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee at a hearing to hear Christine Blasey Ford’s uncorroborated accusation that Kavanaugh sexually attacked her in high school.
“What you want to do is destroy this guy’s life, hold this seat open and hope you win in 2020,” Graham said.
Jabbing his finger, the senator said, “You’ve said that. Not me.”
Republicans have criticized ranking member Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., for waiting until the committee was about to vote to address Ford’s claim, which she had known about for six weeks.
Turning his attention back to Kavanaugh, he told the judge, “You’ve got nothing to apologize for.”
Recalling that he voted for Obama nominees Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, the senator told Democrats, “I would never do to them what you’ve done to this guy.”
He called the Democrats’ actions “the most unethical sham since I’ve been in politics.”
“And if you really wanted to know the truth, you sure as hell wouldn’t have done what you’ve done to this guy.”
Highlighting the absurdity of a charge brought Wednesday by Julie Swetnick, Graham asked Kavanaugh: “Are you a gang rapist?”
Swetnick claims she was at a party when she was in college and Kavanaugh was in high school where she was the victim of a gang rape and Kavanaugh was present. Swetnick, represented by porn lawyer Michael Avenatti, implausibly claims she went on to attend 10 more gang-rape parties.
Graham shook his head and said to Kavanaugh, “I cannot imagine what you and your family have gone through.”
Addressing panel Democrats again, he said: “Boy, ya’ll want power. God, I hope you never get it. I hope the American people can see through this sham. That you knew about it and you held it. You had no intention of protecting Dr. Ford. None.”
Graham told Kavanaugh: “She’s as much of a victim as you are.”
He said to the judge: “You’re looking for a fair process? you came to the wrong town at the wrong time.”
