Obama says he is not trying to take away guns

President Barack Obama denies he’s trying to take away the guns of law-abiding citizens with his recent announcement of executive actions to make it more difficult for criminals to buy weapons.

At CNN’s town hall program “Guns in America,” Obama said he is happy to meet with the National Rifle Association, but that the conversation has to be based on “facts and truth and what we’re actually proposing, not some, you know, imaginary fiction in which Obama is trying to take away your guns.”

He said the reason gun sales spike every time he makes a gun control proposal is not because he intends to go on a gun grab, but because the NRA is convincing its members that’s what he is doing.

That is profitable for gun manufacturers, Obama said, and “It’s a good advertising mechanism, but not necessary.”

Two days after unveiling executive actions intended to expand criminal background checks for firearms transactions and streamline rules for reporting mental-health issues that would block a gun purchase, Obama answered questions from gun control supporters and opponents at a town hall-style event Thursday night.
