Neil Shenvi grew up in Delaware and attended Princeton University as an undergraduate where he worked on high-dimensional function approximation with Professor Herschel Rabitz. He became a Christian in Berkeley, CA where he did his PhD in Theoretical Chemistry at UC – Berkeley with Professor Birgitta Whaley. The subject of his PhD dissertation was quantum computation, including topics in quantum random walks, cavity quantum electrodynamics, spin physics, and the N-representability problem. From 2005-2010, he worked as a postdoctoral associate with Prof. John Tully at Yale where he did research into nonadiabatic dynamics, electron transfer, and surface science. He moved down to Durham in 2010 to do research into nonadiabatic dynamics and electronic structure theory with professor Weitao Yang at Duke University. A few days after arriving in Durham, he had a seizure caused by an undiagnosed 5cm brain tumor between his cerebellum and occipital lobe. By God’s grace, the emergency surgery was a success and he’s been healthy ever since. In 2015, he quit his job at Duke to homeschool their four children, though he still fiddles with quantum mechanics now and then for fun. In addition to his duties as the principal of the South Durham Academy for Math and Science (also known as Daddy Academy), he tutors the Master’s class at their local Classical Conversations homeschool co-op. In his spare time, he enjoys reading, weight-lifting, and video games. He and his wife are members at The Summit Church.

J. Nick Pitts serves as the director of cultural engagement at the Denison Forum on Truth and Culture. He came to the Denison Forum in 2014 after a fateful conversation with its founder, Dr. Jim Denison. Pitts, a Ph.D. candidate at Dallas Baptist University (DBU), had spent the summer studying at Oxford with other students and faculty including Denison, a visiting professor. He contributes to the Forum in the areas of geopolitics and popular culture, as well as serving as the editor of the Daily Briefing. He continues work on his doctorate and serves as an adjunct professor at DBU, teaching a master’s level course in the philosophy of leadership. His Ph.D. research centers upon John F. Kennedy’s engagement of the religious community in the 1960 presidential campaign. He presented a paper on the topic at Calvin College’s 2015 symposium on religion and public life. Serving as their lead pastor for more than a decade, Nick observed the fallout of sexual brokenness and devastation in the lives of men and women in the Church. He recognized, like never before, the need for a culture of grace and healing in the Church. After facing his own addiction to pornography, Nick and his wife, Michelle, found hope and healing through the counseling and group ministries of Pure Desire. The experience radically changed their lives.
