Jenna Ellis is a senior adviser for American Family Association and host of a radio program on the American Family Radio network. She recently wrote about “Real Conservatism: Pursuing What God Ordained.”
She has noticed something we have also discussed on my radio program. Many younger conservative voters believe “the entire conservative project is obsolete.” While it is true that we should want to conserve what has been effective in the past, we don’t have any obligation to conserve bad ideas or flawed institutions.
She acknowledges that, “Every generation eventually realizes that the shiny buildings and bureaucratic titles we’re told to trust are, in reality, just man-made structures run by flawed people. Washington think tanks, legacy media, universities and even parts of our own political machinery have squandered their credibility.”
She concludes that we shouldn’t be trying to conserve flawed institutions. We should work to conserve what God has ordained. The three institutions Scripture establishes are: (1) The Church, tasked with proclaiming truth, (2) The family, the foundational unit of society, and (3) Civil government, designed not to create rights but to secure pre-political rights endowed by our Creator.”
She also has concrete suggestions on what we need to do. We need: “A revitalized church that preaches truth without fear. Strong families capable of withstanding cultural collapse. Legitimate civil government that protects life, liberty and property — not manages speech, faith, or parental rights.”
I agree. This is a good action plan. We don’t need to be marketing the past. Let’s boldly proclaim biblical principles that will continue to have a positive impact on society.
