Different State of the Union Plans

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asked President Donald Trump to postpone his State of the Union address, pointing to “security concerns” at the Capitol during the government shutdown.

Now a Republican lawmaker has offered the president an alternative venue for the speech.

Pelosi sent a letter to Trump on Wednesday suggesting that he reschedule the annual address.

“Sadly, given the security concerns and unless government re-opens this week, I suggest that we work together to determine another suitable date after government has re-opened for this address or for you to consider delivering your State of the Union address in writing to the Congress on January 29th,” Pelosi wrote.

It’s abundantly clear by now that Pelosi is less concerned about security than she is about Trump criticizing her in front of the entire nation again.

The California Democrat doesn’t want the president to tell the nation that the government shutdown would end if she and her party were willing to fund a border wall.

But Pelosi might not be able to stop Trump from delivering a State of the Union address.

While it’s become a tradition for the president to deliver the speech in person on the House floor, he is not required to do so.

Trump could easily deliver the speech elsewhere — for example, Raleigh, North Carolina.

On Friday, Republican Tim Moore, the speaker of the North Carolina House, invited Trump to speak there.

“It is my sincere pleasure as the Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives to invite you to deliver your second State of the Union Address in our chamber of this state’s General Assembly,” Moore said in a statement.

It would be a nice symbolic gesture to hold the annual address miles away from the swamp.

The state lawmakers in North Carolina probably would be welcoming than Congress, which features plenty of people who are openly hateful to the president.

Additionally, the unique venue might just bring Trump’s address more attention, which would make Pelosi furious.

It’s unlikely that she will stop the president from speaking on the House floor, but he certainly has other options available.
