Among the chaplains of MIT, many of whom are affiliated with faculty, professors are Dave Thom’s main focus. A co-founder of the first Faculty Roundtable in 2002 among The Five Colleges in the Amherst MA area, and co-chair of the Cambridge Roundtable, Dave partners with Rev. Dr. Danny Yamashiro and Affiliated Chaplains Bill Hager and Rev. Dr. Nathan Barczi. Dave is also the Project Director for a John Templeton Foundation funded project of 12 teams of colleagues from Boston to Chicago to Duke and the eight Ivies who are professionals at convening Faculty Roundtables to explore science, faith, and philosophy.

His public service career began in 1978, at the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD), where he served 24 distinguished years. During his 11 years as a Patrol Officer, he received meritorious citations for felony arrests. In 1989, he was promoted to Detective, and nine months later was selected for the specialized Homicide Division, where he was part of a team that investigated more than 400 homicides in a four-year period. MPD made arrests in more than 80% of homicides, well above the national average of 60%. In 1999, Clarke became Commanding Officer of MPD’s Intelligence Division which was responsible for producing and sharing intelligence, and providing dignitary protection in conjunction with the Secret Service, the Department of State, and other federal agencies.

David A. Cortman serves as senior counsel and vice president of U.S. litigation with Alliance Defending Freedom. He joined ADF in 2005 and currently supervises a team of nearly 40 attorneys and legal staff who specialize in constitutional law, focusing on religious freedom, sanctity of life, and marriage and family. Cortman has successfully litigated hundreds of constitutional law cases in all levels of federal and state court. He has also argued cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, most recently in Trinity Lutheran Church v. Comer, securing a 7-2 victory that challenged Missouri’s denial of a church’s participation in a playground resurfacing program solely because the church is a religious organization. Cortman also argued Reed v. Town of Gilbert, securing a 9-0 ruling that prohibits the government from discriminating against religious speech while favoring political speech. He has served as lead counsel in Conestoga Wood Specialties v. Burwell, successfully challenging Obamacare’s abortion pill mandate; ACSTO v. Winn, successfully defending Arizona’s school choice tuition tax credit program; and Geneva College v. Burwell and Southern Nazarene University v. Burwell, challenging the abortion pill mandate as applied to non-profit religious organizations. He was co-counsel in Town of Greece v. Galloway, successfully defending the freedom of Americans to pray at public meetings. Cortman has appeared as a guest and has written opinion pieces for numerous major media outlets. He earned his J.D. from Regent University School of Law in 1996, graduating magna cum laude. He is a member of the state bar in Georgia, Florida, Arizona, and the District of Columbia, and is admitted to practice in over two dozen federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He also teaches legal courses on the U.S. Constitution and civil rights.

Dr. David F. Allen studied medicine at St. Andrews University Medical School in Scotland, and Psychiatry and Public Health at Harvard Medical School where he was a Kennedy Fellow. He studied theology under Dr. Francis Schaeffer at L’Abri Fellowship in Switzerland, and did further work in Religion, Psychiatry and Ethics under Professor Arthur Dyck at the Harvard Divinity School. He was a visiting professor at Yale Divinity School where he was mentored by Fr. Henri Nouwen. In Washington, D.C., he was mentored by Dr. Gerald May of the Shalom Institute. Since then, Dr. Allen has taught Psychiatry and Religion at Harvard, Yale and Georgetown Medical School. In 1987 he was awarded the Bennett Commonwealth Prize for his outstanding work in cocaine addiction. He was featured in the P.B.S. special, The Drug Wars, which documented his discovery of crack cocaine and its epidemic in 1985. Dr. Allen has established cocaine treatment centers in The Bahamas and Washington, D.C., and is a recognized expert in all types of addictions and their causes. Dr. Allen has taught at the Chautauqua Institution with Dr. Ross McKenzie and psychoanalyst Janet Gibbs in the field of Psychiatry and Religion and has been a regular facilitator for Young President Organization Group Forums. Dr. Allen has published widely in the areas of Addiction, Spirituality and Psychiatry.
