Gen Z Spirituality
We’ve been hearing a lot about young adults and whether there are rumblings of a revival. Recently I talked with researcher Dr. George Barna about the true state of Gen Z spirituality.
Consider
The good news is that among Gen Z, there are increases in weekly Bible reading and looking to the Bible for moral guidance. Many young adults are interested in deepening their faith. But there are some negative trends as well.
Members of Gen Z are more likely to affirm same-sex marriage, turn to a horoscope for guidance, prefer socialism, deny the existence of absolute truth, and express agnosticism about life after death. The fact that Gen Z is more likely to believe these things should not surprise us. They’re picking up on the secularism, New Age spirituality, and moral relativity that is now pervasive in our culture. As we know from past research, a biblical worldview stopped being predominant in America long ago.
There are reasons to be encouraged. The fact that more Gen Zers are reading the Bible and interested in what it has to say should give us hope. More than anything, however, these trends should spur us on to action and prayer, so that we meet those who are spiritually hungry with biblical discipleship.
Pray
Please pray the following prayer along with me:
Dear God,
Thank you for the signs of hope that we see in our culture, including the clear evidence that young adults are hungry for meaning and moral guidance and are willing to seek it in Your Word.
Continue stirring the hearts of young people in America and around the world, so that they are not satisfied until they find Truth.
Equip and embolden Your church to meet Gen Z, evangelizing them where they are, encouraging them in new faith, and discipling them in biblical community.
In Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
