Born in upstate New York, he spent most of his childhood growing up in Bryan, Ohio. He bought his first guitar at 13 with money he earned mowing lawns, teaching himself to play through music books and by ear. By 14, he had started his first band, continuing to perform throughout his college years. At 20, he became a Christian—a decision that would shape the course of his life and career. He graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology before enrolling in a two-year Bible program at Christian Training Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana. It was out of that ministry that Petra was born. The band released its first album in 1974 and began touring nationally—slowly at first. In those early years, they faced significant resistance from within the church, enduring criticism and skepticism. Over time, however, they built a strong following among young Christians.Decades later, he remains grateful to still be touring the world, sharing a message of hope in Jesus Christ.

Known for his powerful vocals and enduring influence, he remains one of the most respected and impactful figures in Christian music.
